Edwards, Gareth Owen (1947- )

Rugby union player for Cardiff, Wales, and the British Lions, and one of the greatest scrum-halves in the history of the game. He made his début (aged 19) for Wales in 1967 and played 53 consecutive internationals until his last in 1978. In 1968 Edwards became Welsh captain (aged 20 years and 7 months), the youngest ever to lead Wales. He scored a record 20 tries for Wales (a record shared with Gerald Davies). Immensely strong, with a beautiful long pass, he was very quick and deadly near the goal line. His partnership with Barry John at fly-half was one of the great half-back combinations. In retirement Edwards became a distinguished television commentator.
