John Cale

Born in Garnant, John was classically trained and went to study at Goldsmith in London before heading to America. There, he co-founded the Velvet Underground with Lou Reed and Sterling Morrison, and became famous as part of pop artist Andy Warhol's Sixties scene. Cale left the Velvets and began a stellar career as a solo artist, producer (Iggy Pop, Patti Smith), and soundtrack composer (including the upcoming *American Psycho*). He recently finished a film in Wales in which he stars with Catatonia, Super Furry Animals and Manic Street Preachers. In May 2000 the University of Antwerp in Belgium will (or will have depending when you read this) bestow upon him an honorary doctorate.
