Llewellyn, Sir Harry (1911- )
British equestrian and one of the most celebrated showjumpers in the world in the 1950s. Henry (Harry) Morton Llewellyn was born at Merthyr Tydfil, South Wales, and was educated at Oundle and Trinity College, Cambridge. In the 1930s he became a successful steeplechase jockey and was second in the 1936 Grand National on his father's horse Ego. During World War II he was on active service in Italy and Normandy. After the war he became a show-jumper, winning the individual bronze medal at the 1948 Olympic Games and the team gold in 1952. At this time his horse Foxhunter became almost a household name in Britain. On him he won numerous international events, including the King George V Gold Cup in 1948, 1950, and 1953. Foxhunter died in 1960 aged 19. Llewellyn was chairman of the Sports Council for Wales 1971-1981 and was knighted in 1977. He was president of the Royal International Horse Show 1989-1991.
