Newport - town and administrative centre of Newport Borough, Gwent, south-east Wales, a port on the River Usk near its mouth on the Bristol Channel.
Newport is a major steel-producing centre of Great Britain, and a commercial and transport centre of south-east Wales. Its port, improved in the 1970s, imports ore and timber, and exports iron, steel, and machinery. Located here is St Woollos's Church (a cathedral since 1921), and a notable museum and art gallery.
Newport received a charter granting it trade privileges in 1385. In 1839 it was the scene of Chartist riots, as bullet marks in the town still testify. The town developed as a coal-exporting and industrial centre in the 19th century. Population (Newport Borough, 1991 preliminary) 129,900.
